SYMPTOMS
When you use the Japanese version of Microsoft Excel 2000 with a program that uses a hook process into Microsoft Windows Messaging to add a calculated field that contains a field name with Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) characters to a PivotTable, Excel 2000 may quit unexpectedly and you receive an Access Violation error message.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if the hook process returns American National Standards Institute (ANSI) characters, instead of the expected Unicode characters.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

This problem was first corrected by a hotfix that is included in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3.
After you install the latest service pack, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section to set the QFE_Yokohama registry key and to activate the hotfix.

To activate the hotfix, follow these steps:
- Quit Excel 2000.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate, and then click to select the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/9.0/Excel/Options - After you select the key that is specified in step 4, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type QFE_Yokohama, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click the QFE_Yokohama registry key, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
- On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
