SYMPTOMS

If you set the Path property for a motion path animation effect to Locked in Microsoft PowerPoint, you can still move the line that specifies the motion path.

CAUSE

The Locked setting does not lock a motion path animation effect to a specific location that you cannot change on the slide. Instead, the Locked setting tells PowerPoint not to move the path when you move the corresponding object that has the animation effect applied.

The following table describes what happens when you move the object or the path, based on whether the Path property is set to Locked or Unlocked:

	Drag object	Drag path
Locked	Path does not move	Path moves, object does not
Unlocked	Path moves with object	Path moves, object does not

RESOLUTION

Although you cannot lock the motion path to a specific location on the slide, you can prevent other people from moving your paths (or making any other changes to your presentation). To do this, save your presentation so that it requires a modify password.

To do this, follow these steps as appropriate for your environment:

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007

1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Save As.
2. In the Save As dialog box, click Tools, and then click General Options.
3. In the Password to modify box under File sharing settings for this document, type a password that the user must type to open the presentation and save changes.
4. Click OK.

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2002

1. On the File menu, click Save As.
2. In the Save As dialog box, click Tools, and then click Security Options.
3. In the Password to modify box under File sharing settings for this document, type a password that the user must type to open the presentation and save changes.
4. Click OK.
