BUG #: 352217 (SHILOH_BUGS)

SYMPTOMS

If the MSSQLServer Service startup account is set to the local system account, xp_startmail fails with the following error message:

Server: Msg 18025, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
xp_startmail: failed with mail error 0x80040111

It is not apparent from the error message that the MSSQLServer Service should be configured to use a domain account rather than the system account in order for SQL Mail to function properly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

Installation of SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1 changes the above error message to the following:

Server: Msg 18035, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
xp_startmail: Your SQL Server Service is running under the local system account. You need to change your SQL Server Service account to run under a domain account in order to complete this operation.
