SYMPTOMS

NOTE: The previous version of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine was called Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:

  • You specify an alternate location at which to install the MSDE program files during the installation of SharePoint Team Services.

-and-

  • You do not specify the location of the MSDE program files when you remove SharePoint Team Services.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, remove MSDE by using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install SharePoint Team Services and use all default settings, MSDE is installed in the following location:

When you remove SharePoint Team Services, this is the location that MSDE is removed from.
