SYMPTOMS
The Microsoft Exchange 2000 directory may need to be renamed, moved, or deleted for a variety of reasons -- such as troubleshooting, file backup, or reinstallation.
Exchange 2000 Server is installed by default into the C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr directory, but it may be installed into a directory of a different name on a different drive, depending on the configuration chosen during the Exchange 2000 installation.
Even after you stop all Exchange services and make sure that no Exchange processes are active, you receive an "Access is denied" error message if you attempt to rename this directory.
CAUSE
Because all Exchange Server Internet protocols run in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), the Inetinfo process must also be stopped to remove all open file locks to the C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr directory.
NOTE: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr is the default name for this directory; a specific system may use a different directory, as described earlier in this article.
Exchange 2000 Server depends primarily on the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service within IIS, and may also require the Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP) service, depending on which Exchange options are installed.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, stop all IIS-related services, also stop the Microsoft Search Service and the License Logging Service before you try to rename the Exchsrvr directory.
This is most easily accomplished by stopping the IIS Admin service, either through the Services snap-in (click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services to open Services MMC), or by running net stop iisadmin at the command prompt (click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK to open the Windows 2000 command prompt). When you are prompted to stop dependent services, click Yes.
Because all IIS services are dependent on the IIS Admin service, the Exchange Internet protocol-related services will stop, release their open file locks on the Exchsrvr directory, and then allow the operation to proceed.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
