SYMPTOMS
When you install Microsoft Office or you start Microsoft Word, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:
NotePath
is the full path to Mcps.dll on your administrative installation.
Also, if you try to insert clip art into your document, you may receive one of the following error messages:
CAUSE
This behavior occurs if all of the following conditions are true:
- When you installed Office, the Clip Gallery feature was set to Run from Network.
- You installed Office from an administrative installation on a Novell NetWare server.
RESOLUTION
To avoid this problem, set the Clip Gallery feature to Run from My Computer when you install Office.
If Office is already installed with the Clip Gallery feature set to Run from Network, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- In the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Change (on Microsoft Windows 2000) or click Add/Remove (on Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0).
- In the Office Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Add or Remove Features.
- Expand Office Tools, click the down arrow next to Clip Gallery, and then click Run from My Computer. Click Update Now.
If the preceding method does not correct the problem, use one of the following methods.
Method 1
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
Import the ODBC registry keys from a working system into this system's registry, and then reinstall Office. To do this, follow these steps:
- Locate a working system that is similar to or a duplicate of this system.
- Run Regedit.exe, locate the ODBC keys, and then use the export option to back up the following keys to a floppy disk:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ODBC
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ODBC - On the system that is causing problems, repeat step 2, and then export a copy of both ODBC keys to the desktop.
- Insert the floppy disk that contains copies of the working ODBC keys into the system that is causing problems.
- Double-click each *.reg file that you copied. Click Yes when you are prompted to import this key into the registry.
- Restart the system, and then run Office Setup. Click Repair Office, and then click either Reinstall Office or Detect and Repair Errors in My Office Installation.
Method 2
Reinstall Windows into a new folder. Do not reinstall Windows over itself, because this is a registry error and will be propagated to the same installation.
