SYMPTOMS
SQL Mail may start using the default mail profile, and not the mail profile configured for SQL Mail. This occurs when SQL Mail is not started with the xp_startmail extended stored procedure, but is instead started by a the first call to xp_sendmail, xp_readmail, xp_findnextmsg, xp_deletemail, or sp_processmail.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior either:
- Set the Mail profile for SQL Mail to the Default profile.
-or-
- Explicitly start SQL Mail by using xp_startmail.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.
MORE INFORMATION
SQL Server 2000 does not start SQL Mail when the server starts. Instead, the first call to xp_sendmail, xp_readmail, xp_findnextmsg, xp_deletemail, or sp_processmail starts SQL Mail. Although xp_startmail does check for a configured mail profile other than the default profiles, the other procedures do not.
