SYMPTOMS

When you use Detect and Repair on a multiple-user computer that is running Microsoft Office 2000, an invalid Microsoft Outlook icon may be installed on the desktop of the other users that do not have Office 2000 installed.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

The global version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, have each user delete the Outlook shortcut that was installed on their desktop.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

If you double-click the invalid Outlook shortcut, one of the following situations can occur:

  • The following error message is received:

    Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. A program error occurred. Quit Outlook and Microsoft Windows and then start again.

    -or-

  • The My Computer dialog box may open.

    -or-

  • The user may inadvertently use the incorrect mail client.
