SYMPTOMS
When you change the write cache settings for the hard disk, these settings may not persist after you restart your computer. When you restart the computer, the Write caching enabled setting may always be enabled.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if you disable the write cache for the hard disk by using the Disk properties; the Windows 2000 disk drivers send the disable write cache command to the hard disk, and the write cache is disabled for that Windows session. However, the Windows 2000 disk drivers do not save the user selections for the hard disk Write caching enabled setting. When you restart Windows 2000, the Windows 2000 disk drivers enable the hard disk write cache setting by default.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

To enable and disable write caching:
- On your desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
- Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
- Double-click the Disk drives branch to expand it.
- Right-click the hard disk that you want to work with, and then click Properties.
- Perform one of the following steps, as appropriate:
- To enable write caching, click the Disk Properties tab, click to select the Write Cache Enabled check box, and then click OK.
- To disable write caching, click the Disk Properties tab, click to clear the Write Cache Enabled check box, and then click OK.
