SYMPTOMS
If you try to use NTBackup with an OnStream ADR device, the tape cartridges may not be correctly identified. For example, "MiniQIC", "Travan," or "MP_8mm," may be identified as some other cartridge.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because OnStream introduced new tape cartridges. These cartridges are not currently identified correctly.
RESOLUTION

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

Since Windows 2000 was introduced, new media types have come to market and, unlike Windows NT 4.0, there is no way to permit new media types to be "dropped in." In this particular case, OnStream has introduced 2 mechanically unique tape cartridges. Removable Storage is not currently aware of these cartridges. Removable Storage is only aware of a finite list of media types. Windows 2000 SP2 adds 2 new tape cartridge media types to this list so that NTBackup and other products can identify the new cartridge types. These cartridges are not identified by capacity or length because the capacity and length may increase in the future. The new cartridge types are listed as ADR 1 and ADR 2. The cartridges are physically different and autoloaders must differentiate between them.
