SYMPTOMS

When you use the Call Contact feature in Outlook 2000, the Microsoft Windows 2000 dialing rules are not applied to the number that you are trying to dial.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the country code is not added to the phone number in the Outlook 2000 contact.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, enable the Country Code feature in Outlook 2000. To do this:

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. Open a contact.
  3. On the contact, click the Actions menu, and point to Call Contact, and then click New Call.
  4. Click the Dialing Options button.
  5. Click to select Automatically Add Country code to Local Phone Numbers, and then click OK twice.
  6. Save and close the contact.

The pervious steps only affect new contacts, and do not change existing contacts automatically. Use the following steps to apply this change to existing contacts:

  1. Open a contact.
  2. Click the Phone Number field that you want to update.
  3. Press the SPACEBAR once, press the BACKSPACE key once, and then press ENTER. The phone number should be in the following format:

    +1 (Area Code) Phone Number

  4. Save and close the contact.

Repeat these steps for each contact that you created prior to enabling the Country Code feature of Outlook 2000.
