SYMPTOMS
After you add a static route to the route table of a host computer, the static route is deleted if that host computer receives an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) redirect message from the same gateway that is defined in the static route. After 10 minutes, you can no longer reach the host for which you added the route.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 handles redirects without first verifying that the address of the first new hop is different from the source of the redirect. The route that is obtained by the ICMP redirect overwrites the static route and is added to the route table, but for only 10 minutes.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
