SYMPTOMS
On a computer that has little memory available for processing, when you try to gain access to the CD-ROM drive, the computer may stop responding (hang) without warning and in no discernible pattern of behavior. This also may occur when you use Volume Control for the first time.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when a device (CD-ROM drive or DVD drive) does not correctly process your first attempt to gain access to it. This causes subsequent attempts to enter a queue and remain there without being correctly handled. Eventually, all available memory is allocated to the drive, and the computer stops responding.
RESOLUTION

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
