SYMPTOMS
If the .stm file has been corrupted manually, when you perform an offline defragmentation procedure, the corruption is not detected (the defragmentation process does not calculate the checksum of the pages); in fact, the checksum of the page is recalculated during the defragmentation procedure. After the checksum of the page has been recalculated, the page contains a valid checksum and the corruption remains undetected (depending on the point of corruption).
RESOLUTION

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.
