SYMPTOMS
When you double-click a total field in your PivotTable, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
CAUSE
This error message occurs when the following conditions are true:
- Your PivotTable contains more than one data field.
-and-
- You double-click a total field for one of the data fields.
Excel cannot show details of a total if more than one total field exists in the PivotTable.
RESOLUTION
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel 2002.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, remove all data fields except one. To do this, follow these steps:
- In the PivotTable, click the arrow next to Data to display the list of data fields.
- Click to clear all but one of the check boxes for the data fields listed.
- Click OK.
