SYMPTOMS

Local users of Exchange 2000 Server or of Exchange Server 2003 may not be able to receive inbound SMTP mail. The sender may receive the following non-delivery report:

The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- (UserName@internalDom.ParentDom.gov)(reason: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for UserName@internalDom.ParentDom.gov)

Local users can send outbound SMTP mail. If you use the NSLook tool to verify the MX- and A-records, it reveals correct ones. Other Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 servers in the same internal domain can send and receive SMTP mail.

CAUSE

This issue may occur for several reasons. There are many possible causes for rejection of inbound mail. For example, this issue may occur if one or more firewalls isolate Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 from the outside Internet world.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

  1. Confirm that the firewall is redirecting the inbound SMTP mail to the correct Exchange 2000 Server-based or Exchange Server 2003-based computer.
  2. Configure Exchange 2000 and Exchange Server 2003 to accept inbound mail from the firewall by using the property pages of the SMTP Virtual server.
