"Unsafe Removal of Device" Message When You Eject a Docking Station with an Attached USB Device

SYMPTOMS

When you eject a docking station that has a Universal Serial Bus (USB) removable device attached to it after you install Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or apply the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, you may receive an "Unsafe Removal of Device" warning message:

260830 STOP 0x1E in Usbhub.sys with Surprise Removal of Plug and Play USB Hub


IMPORTANT: The hotfix that is described in Q260830 and which is included in Windows 2000 SP1, introduced a regression. If you have not installed Windows 2000 SP1 or applied the hotfix that is described in Q260830, this article does not apply to you.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because of a logic error in the code for the Usbhub.sys file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

If you are running Windows 2000 with no services packs installed and you have not applied the hotfix that is described in Q260830, you do not need this hotfix.

If you are running Windows 2000 with no services packs installed, but you have applied the hotfix that is described in Q260830, you need to do one of the following:

  • Uninstall the hotfix that is described in Q260830.
  • Install the hotfix that is described in this article, Q287922.

If you are running Windows 2000 with SP1 installed, you need to install the hotfix that is described in this article, Q287922.
