SYMPTOMS

After you install America Online (AOL) 6.0 on your Windows 2000-based computer, the following issues may occur:

  • You may receive DLL errors.
  • You may have problems with Microsoft Outlook 98 or Outlook 2000.
  • You may not be able to access the Add/Remove Programs feature in Control Panel.

When you install AOL 6.0 for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium, and Windows 2000 Revision 4097.353 (32-bit), you may receive the following message, which may remain on your computer for a long time:

Configuring Network adapter. Please wait.

Note You may also receive other error messages or you may have problems with other programs.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because early versions of AOL 6.0 were not designed for use with Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove AOL, restore any damaged Windows 2000 files, and then upgrade to the newest version of AOL that is designed for use with Windows 2000. To remove AOL and restore Windows 2000 files, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, select Programs, select Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

This causes a command prompt window to open.

  1. At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow.

This starts the System File Checker. System File Checker restores mismatched system files by copying original versions from the source media. Allow the SFC process to complete.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Locate AOL 6.0 and then click Uninstall.
  4. Restart the computer.
