FIX: Access Violation Occurs When You Use the Server Network Utility Without Administrator Privileges on Computer

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Server Network Utility without Administrator privileges on the computer, an unhandled access violation occurs. The access violation does not occur when you open the utility. The access violation occurs when you click OK under the General tab or when you click the Network Libraries tab. This problem does not occur when you open the Server Network Utility from SQL Server Enterprise Manager.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

Open the Server Network Utility through the SQL Server Enterprise Manager as follows:

  1. Highlight the server name, and then right-click Properties.
  2. Under the General tab, click Network Configuration.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

Users must have Administrator privileges on the computer in order to access the Server Network Utility directly. After applying the fix, a user without administrator privileges on the computer is not allowed to access the Server Network Utility directly. Instead, the user receives the following error message:

Your login account does not have the permissions required to run this application.
Consult your system or database administrator to obtain the required permissions.
