SYMPTOMS

When you start Word or attempt to use a Word add-in, you may receive the following or similar error message

Run-time Error 48 File Not Found filename

where filename is the name of a dynamic-link library (DLL).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when an add-in attempts to use a DLL file that was not found. The add-in may assume that the DLL is in the current Office installation folder, or in a subfolder of that folder. Office XP is installed by default to the C:\Progam Files\Microsoft Office\Office10 folder, which is a different location than earlier versions of Office. The add-in may have installed the DLL to the C:\Progam Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder, or in a subfolder of that folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps to move the DLL to the correct folder.

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

In Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. On the View menu, click Details.
  3. Type the file name listed in the error message in the Named box, and then click Find Now.

In Windows 2000 and Windows Me, type the file name listed in the error message in the Search for files or folders named box, and then click Search Now.
  4. Depending on whether the file was found, use one of the following steps:

If the file is not found, reinstall the add-in, or contact the add-in vendor for more information. Do not follow steps 5-9.

    -or-

If the file is found, note the path of the file.
  5. Right-click the file, and then click Copy.
  6. Click Start, and then click Run.
  7. In the Open box, type the path to the existing file, but change \Office\ to \Office10\. For example, if the path was C:\Progam Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Addins, type C:\Progam Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Addins.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Depending on whether the folder was found, use one of the following steps:

If the folder is open, on the Edit menu, click Paste.

    -OR-

If the following error message is displayed

path is not accessible. This folder was moved or removed.

click OK, and then click Cancel. Contact the add-in vendor for more information.
