SYMPTOMS

If you search for Microsoft Word 2002 documents that contain double-byte character set (DBCS) characters, the Indexing service does not return any Word documents that match your query. Therefore, you cannot find Word documents by searching for DBCS characters that are contained in your Word documents.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a limitation in the Microsoft Office Document filter (Offfilt.dll) that is used by the Indexing service to index Microsoft Office files. The filter incorrectly indexes Word documents that contain DBCS characters.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this fix.

MORE INFORMATION

Document filters are components that interpret the structure of a particular type of document, such as a Word or an HTML document. Filters are used by the Indexing service to extract content and property values from files. The Indexing service merges the extracted information into catalogs of indexes for quick and efficient searches.
