SYMPTOMS

When you run the Setup Computer Wizard disk on a client computer in a Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 network, the network settings are configured. However, when you restart the computer, you may receive the following message:

Administrator access is required to install client applications

CAUSE

In SBS 4.5, when you run the Setup Computer Wizard disk on a Microsoft Windows NT Workstation or server that is running Microsoft Windows NT Server, if you are the designated user on that computer, you automatically become a member of the Local Administrators group on that Windows NT-based client computer. However, in SBS 2000, you are not automatically added to the Local Administrators group on Windows NT- and Windows 2000-based client computers, and, therefore, do not have the rights to install programs.

During Setup on the client computer, the networking components are configured. When Setup completes, you must restart the computer. After you restart the computer, Setup asks if you would like to install the client programs on the client computer. If you click Start Now, Setup attempts to install the client programs that were designated during the Setup Computer Wizard process that created the floppy disk.

If you are not a member of the Local Administrators group on the client that you are logged on to, you cannot install client programs, and you receive the message that is described in the "Summary" section.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, log on as a user that has Local Administrator rights on that client computer, and then add the domain user that is assigned to that client computer to the Local Administrator group. The next time that user logs on, they can install the client programs.
