CAUSE

This problem occurs when the project that you are saving from Microsoft Project 2000 contains custom bar formatting or custom cell formatting that exceeds the custom formatting limits for Microsoft Project 98.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).

To obtain SR-1, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

288953 PRJ2000: How to Obtain and Install Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1

NOTE: To ensure that you can successfully open your project in Microsoft Project 98, Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1 only exports custom bar formatting or custom cell formatting up to a maximum number that is less than the actual limit allowed by Microsoft Project 98. When this number is reached, the custom formatting for remaining bars or cells will not be exported.

To temporarily work around this problem, remove some or all custom formatting before you try to save to the Microsoft Project 98 format. To remove all custom bar formatting or custom cell formatting, follow these steps.

NOTE: If you applied custom formatting to more than one view in the project, you must follow these steps for each view.

  1. Make sure that all tasks are visible in the view. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Turn off autofiltering, if it is on. To do this, point to Filtered for on the Project menu, and then click AutoFilter.
    2. Apply the All Tasks filter. To do this, point to Filtered for on the Project menu, and then click All Tasks.
    3. Expand all subtasks. To do this, point to Outline on the Project menu, point to Show, and then click All Subtasks.
  2. Select all tasks. To do this, click the Select Table button (the blank gray button in the upper-left corner of the table portion of the view).
  3. To remove all custom cell formatting, point to Clear on the Edit menu, and then click Formats.
  4. To remove all custom bar formatting, click Bar on the Format menu, and then click Reset in the Format Bar dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
