This article was previously published under Q285407

SYMPTOMS

When you print a Microsoft PowerPoint slide that contains partially transparent fills in AutoShapes and tables to a Hewlett Packard (HP) LaserJet printer, the shading prints as dark and light bands instead of as a grayscale background as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you print shapes with transparent fills as grayscale to certain printers. This behavior is known to occur with the following printers:

HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL with the PCL6 driver
HP LaserJet 5000 Series PCL with the PCL6 driver

Neither the PostScript version of these same printers nor the PCL5e version of the PCL drivers exhibit this behavior.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your printer for information about upgrades to your printer driver.

If a new version of the printer driver is not available, obtain and install PCL5e version of the PCL driver. Hewlett Packard maintains a download site for all their software updates at the following location:

From here you can search on your model of printer and download the correct driver for your operating system.
