SYMPTOMS
After you insert a SanDisk CompactFlash adapter into a PC Card slot on a portable computer, the computer may seem to stop responding (hang). After several minutes, the computer returns to normal, but the CompactFlash PC Card is not detected through Windows Explorer.
CAUSE
This issue is caused by the CompactFlash PC Card's being correctly identified as a PCMCIA IDE/ATAPI adapter (controller) but not working because of incompatible drivers.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, try installing the Fujitsu IDE PC Card. Follow these steps:
- In Control Panel, double-click System, click Hardware, and then click Device Manager.
- Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, right-click PCMCIA IDE/ATAPI Controller, and then click Properties.
- Click Driver, and then click Update Driver.
- Click Next, click Display a list of known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver, and then click Next.
- Click Show all hardware for this device class, click Standard IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in the Manufacturers list, and then click Standard IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in the Models list.
- Install the Fujitsu IDE PC Card.
The CompactFlash PC Card should now show up as a removable drive and should work correctly.
MORE INFORMATION
This workaround does not necessarily work on all computers. However, it has been shown to work on Sony VAIO portable computers.
