SYMPTOMS
During the startup process of a Pre-Boot Execution Environment (PXE) client, the PXE client may receive the following message while attempting to contact the Remote Installation Services (RIS) server.
The PXE client has received an IP address from the network DHCP server, but it does not receive a response from RIS server.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior:
- Verify the RIS installation:
- In Active Directory Users and Computers, click Domain Controllers in the console tree.
- In the details pane, right-click the RIS server, and then click Properties.
- On the Remote Install tab, verify that the Respond to client computers requesting service check box is selected.
- Verify that the Do not respond to unknown client computers check box is not selected unless the client computers that are experiencing this issue have been pre-staged in Active Directory with their global universal identification (GUID). Only use this option if you have already added the client computers (which are to be installed by RIS PXE or RIS Boot Disk) to Active Directory with the GUID information.
- Verify that the RIS server is authorized to perform the Boot Information Negotiation Layer (BINL) service on the network:
- In DHCP, click the DHCP root object in the console tree.
- On the Action menu, click Manage Authorized Servers.
- Verify that the RIS server is member of the authorized servers list. If it is not in the list, click Add, and then type the IP address or server name to add the RIS server to the list of authorized servers.
- Review the following logs in Event Viewer for the RIS server:
- The following event should be logged in the Application log:
3/6/2001 11:51:05 AM BINLSVC Information None 1003 N/A COMPUTERNAME The BINL service successfully read its settings from the directory service.
- Additionally the following event should be logged in the System log:
3/6/2001 11:42:52 AM DhcpServer Information None 1044 N/A COMPUTERNAME The DHCP/BINL service on the local machine, belonging to the Windows Administrative domain domainname.com, has determined that it is authorized to start. It is servicing clients now.
- The following event should be logged in the Application log:
