SUMMARY

You cannot use Exchange System Manager to remove Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computers from a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server administrative group. This article explains how use the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program to remove these computers.

MORE INFORMATION

  1. Ensure that the account you are logged in as has Full Exchange Administrator permissions, as well as service account Administrator permissions to the Exchange Server 5.5 site.
  2. Start the Exchange System Manager program.
  3. From the left pane in the Exchange System Manager program, click to expand Administrative Groups, click to expand Admin_Group, click to expand Folders, and then click to expand Public Folders.
  4. Right click Public Folders and then click View System Folders.

Note The Folders object is located in the first administrative group that was upgraded. If you do not see the Folders object, check the other Administrative Groups to locate this object.
  5. Under System Folders, click to expand Offline Address Book to select the Offline Address Book. The Offline Address Book should be in the following format:

    EX:/O=ORG/OU=Site

Right click the folder, click Properties, and then click the Replication tab.

Verify that the "Replicate content to these Public Stores" has an Exchange 2000 computer listed. If a replica does not exist on an Exchange 2000 computer, click the Add button to add a replica to at least one Exchange 2000 computer.
  6. Repeat steps 5-7, for offline Address Book Version 2 (under Offline Address Book).
  7. Repeat steps 5-7 for the Schedule+ Free Busy Folder.
  8. Repeat Steps 5-7 for the Organization Forms (under Eforms Registry).
  9. If public folders are present on the computer running Exchange Server 5.5, they will need to be rehomed to an Exchange 2000 computer within the Administrative group. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  10. Move any connectors on this server over to a Site Replication Service (SRS) server in the site (for example: site connector, directory replication connector).
  11. Wait for the replication to complete. Verify that preceding steps have been performed before you continue to the next section.

Important Verify that all mailboxes have been moved to another Exchange Server computer. Allow time for all clients to log into their mailboxes after they are moved so that their profile is redirected to the new server. At this point you may want to just power down the Exchange Server 5.5 computer to ensure that everything functions properly before actually uninstalling Exchange from the server. When you are convinced that everything is functioning properly, you can uninstall Exchange from the server.

After you begin the procedure described in the next section, you cannot reverse the process. You must complete this procedure.
  12. From the Exchange 2000 or Exchange Server 5.5 computer, start the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program. When you receive the prompt for a server to connect to, type in the name of the Exchange 2000 SRS server for that administrative group. Alternatively, you can click File, click Connect to Server, and then type in the name of SRS server.

Note You cannot delete an Exchange Server 5.5 computer if you are connected to it with Exchange Administrator program. Use Connect to Server to connect to a different Exchange Server computer first. Also, Exchange Administrator will not allow you to delete the server if Exchange services are still running on it.

If you have an Internet Mail Service on the last Exchange Server 5.5 computer, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles for additional information:

  13. Click the Exchange Server 5.5 computer that you want to remove from the administrative group, and then press the DELETE key.
  14. Start the Active Directory Connector Management tool.
  15. Right-click the Config_CA_SRS_Server_Name object, and then click Replicate Now.
  16. Wait for replication to occur.

Note The Administrator program removes the Exchange Server 5.5 computer from the SRS database. The Config_CA object "reads" this delete, and then replicates it to Active Directory.

Important Do not remove a Config_CA or an SRS from your Exchange environment unless you are ready to follow the instructions in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: 272314 Preparing a Mixed Mode organization for conversion to Native Mode (link provided at the end of this article). We strongly recommend that you keep all Site Replication Service (SRS) databases and all Config_CA connection agreements in place until after you have removed the last Exchange 5.5 server from your organization. To verify that there are no more system or public folders in use on Exchange Server 5.5, use the Administrator program to connect to the Exchange Server 5.5 computer. Under the public information store, expand Replication Status. The system and public folders disappear after IS maintenance has run and has discovered that all the content has replicated and that there are no other replicas to backfill to. (By default, IS maintenance occurs nightly.)
