256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Visio Network Equipment (VNE) after you successfully install Visio 2000, you may receive the following error messages:

Setup has detected older versions of system files that are required for this solution. To continue with Setup and have Setup update the system files, select Yes....

DCOM95 can only be installed on Windows 95. For Windows NT and Windows 98, please install latest service packs.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you are running Microsoft Windows 2000, and Distributed COM (DCOM) is not enabled on your computer, or the following registry key is incorrectly set to something other than Y:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\EnableDCOM

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Run the DCOM Configuration Utility

DCOM contains a configuration utility that modifies the Windows registry. To run this utility, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type DCOMCNFG, and then click OK.

The Distributed COM Configuration Properties utility starts. Click No in any DCOM Configuration Warnings that appear.

  1. In the Distributed COM Configuration Properties dialog box, click the Default Properties tab.
  2. Click to select the Enable Distributed COM on this computer check box, and then click OK.

Now that DCOM is enabled on the computer, you can run Setup from the VNE CD to set up Visio Network Equipment.

Method 2: Edit the Windows Registry

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Quit all Windows programs.
  2. On the Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. In the left pane of Registry Editor, select the following registry key (folder):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole

  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
  6. Type EnableDCOM and press ENTER.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, type Y, and then click OK.
  9. On the Registry menu, click Exit.

The Registry Editor automatically saves your changes.

Now that DCOM is enabled on the computer, you can run Setup from the VNE CD to set up Visio Network Equipment.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
