SYMPTOMS
When you are using Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging (IM) Service, you may not receive status updates for users on your contact list. For example, after UserB adds UserA to their Instant Messaging contact list, instant messages can be sent between UserA and UserB, but when UserA changes their status from Online to Out to lunch, UserB is not notified of UserA's new status.
Note If you turned on logging in Internet Information Services (IIS), you can examine the IIS logs that are located at C:\winnt\system32\logfiles\w3svc1. You can search by using the word "notify," and you will see a string that matches the following example:

CAUSE
This issue can occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
- The Anonymous access option is not enabled on the InstMsg virtual directory in IIS.
- The wrong permissions are set on specific Exchange folders or .dll files.
- There is corruption within the IM database.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
- Click Start, point to Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
- Click to expand the default Web site.
- Right-click InstMsg virtual directory, and then click Properties.
- Click the Directory Security tab, click Edit in the Anonymous access and authentication control section, and then verify that the Anonymous access option is enabled.
- Click Edit in the Account used for anonymous access section.
- Verify that the anonymous account is entered, and then type the correct password or click Allow IIS to control password.
If the previous procedure did not resolve this issue, examine the permissions for the following folder and file:
- C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin has the Authenticated user with at least Read and Read and Execute permissions.
- C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin\msimsrv.dll has the Authenticated user with at least Read and Read and Execute permissions.
If the issue is still unresolved, follow these steps:
- Stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service.
- Rename the C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\IMdata directory to C:\Program Files\IMdataold.
- Start the World Wide Web Publishing Service.
