This article was previously published under Q283252

SYMPTOMS

A non-administrator user who tries to start the System Restore utility on a Windows XP-based computer may receive the following error message:

System Restore
You do not have sufficient security privileges to restore your system.
Please contact your site administrator, or log out and log in again as an administrator and try again.

In addition, the System Restore tab, under System Properties, is not present.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because only users who have administrator accounts can start or configure the System Restore utility on a Windows XP-based computer. All other user accounts receive the preceding error message when they try to use this utility.

This behavior can also occur if the user who is attempting to start or configure the System Restore utility does not have one of the following five permissions:

  • Manage auditing and security log
  • Take ownership of files or other objects
  • Shut down the system
  • Back up files and directories
  • Restore files and directories

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
