SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Works 6 or Microsoft Works Suite 2001, you may receive the following error message:

The install process was interrupted because the computer is out of disk space or a virus or other programs may be running.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions is true:

  • You do not have enough free disk space on your computer:
    • Works 6.0 requires 245 megabytes (MB) of free disk space
    • Works Suite 2001 requires 930 MB of free disk space.

    NOTE: If Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 is not already installed on your computer, you need 80 MB of free disk space available on the disk on which Microsoft Windows is installed.

  • The Works CD-ROM is dirty or damaged.
  • Other programs are running on the computer when you attempt to install Works.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Free Disk Space

If you have less than the minimum required amount of disk space, free up some space on the hard disk or choose a minimal install.

Clean the CD-ROM

To clean the CD-ROM, gently wipe the silver side of the CD-ROM with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth. Do not use paper cloth which can scratch the plastic and leave streaks. When you clean the CD-ROM, wipe from the center of the disc outward; do not use a circular motion.

Clean Boot into Windows 98

A clean boot loads Windows without starting any other programs that may interfere with the installation.

If the program runs correctly after you clean boot the computer, repeat the steps except reverse some of the clean boot procedures to help isolate the program that is causing the issue.

  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type msconfig in the Open box.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Click Create Backup.

    NOTE: If you click Create Backup again, the last backup file is overwritten.
  4. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process Config.sys file
    • Process Autoexec.bat file
    • Process Winstart.bat file (if not grayed out)
    • Load startup group items


  5. On the Win.ini tab, click the plus next to [Windows] to expand the section.
  6. Click to clear the following check boxes:

    Load=
    Run=

  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Yes to restart your computer.

NOTE: When the computer restarts do not be alarmed if many of your programs that usually load when you start your computer no longer start.

To restore your original Startup options, click Normal Startup on the General tab in the System Configuration Utility, and then restart the computer.
