SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) clients may not retrieve service principle names (SPNs) from an MIT Kerberos server.

CAUSE

When the LDAP client makes a call for an SPN, it uses "LDAP" (in uppercase letters) instead of "ldap" (in lowercase letters). Request for Comments (RFC) 1510 defines only lowercase usage. MIT Kerberos servers that are RFC 1510-compliant are case sensitive. Therefore, requests for an SPN may not work to an MIT Kerberos server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
