SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Office XP from a Web server by doing the following:

  1. You click the link to Setup.exe on the Web page that contains the administrative installation of Office.
  2. You click Run this program from its current location (or Open).

You cannot run Setup, and Setup may quit unexpectedly. As a result, you cannot install Office XP directly from a Web Uniform Resource Locator (URL) source.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you try to install Office XP from a secure Web server location. For example, user authentication or security (user name and password or HTTPS connection) is required to access the Web site.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, run Office XP Setup from the command line by using the /webinstall command-line option. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Windows Installer requires that the Wininet.dll and Urlmon.dll files be installed on the client if you are installing from a Web server. This means that, to perform this procedure, you must use Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later.

  1. Start Internet Explorer and connect to the Web page that contains the administrative installation of Office XP. Type your user name and password (as appropriate) to access the page.
  2. Click the Setup.exe link.
  3. In the File Download dialog box, click Save this program to disk (or Save).
  4. In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
  5. After the download is complete, click Start and then click Run.
  6. In the Open box, type the appropriate line where local path is the location on the local hard disk where you saved the Setup.exe file, domain is the domain name, user name is your user name, password is your password, and administrative installation folder is the folder on the Web server that contains the Office XP installation files. Click OK.

    local path\setup.exe /webinstall "http://domain%5Cuser name:password@server name/administrative installation folder"

    -or-

    local path\setup.exe /webinstall "https://domain%5Cuser name:password@server name/administrative installation folder"

NOTE: Do not include "http://%22 or "https://%22 in the server name parameter. Also, if you do not have a domain, specify user name:password in the command line. If you have a domain, you cannot type a backslash character (\) in the command line. Instead, you must type %5C after the domain name.

  7. Follow the steps in the Office XP Setup Wizard to install Office XP.NOTE: Microsoft does not recommend that you perform an HTTP installation of Office XP from a Web server under certain scenarios.
