SYMPTOMS

Developers may be unable to manipulate values that conform to the Object(Presentation-Address) syntax for attributes in the Active Directory. While this datatype is supported by Active Directory, attempts to set a value of this syntax may not work, and the server may generate an "Invalid Attribute Syntax" LDAP result code.

The Active Directory schema defines an Application-Entity class that must contain a "Presentation-Address" attribute in order to be created. This error would generally be encountered when you try to create instances of the applicationEntity class.

When you try to create applicationEntity objects, the error message appears to be similar to the following error message:

Automation Error
The attribute syntax specified to the directory service is invalid.
ErrNum: -2147016693

If you use Microsoft Network Monitor to capture packets from a computer that is attempting to create applicationEntity objects, you see an LDAP AddResponse that is similar to the following LDAP AddResponse:

LDAP: Result Code = Invalid Attribute Syntax
LDAP: Error Message = 00000057: LdapErr: DSID-0C090909, comment: Error in attribute
