SYMPTOMS

You may experience problems with speech recognition, such as poor recognition, under the following conditions:

  • You install a different microphone from the one that you used to create your speech recognition profile and to train with. -or-

  • You add an additional microphone to your system. -or-

  • Before you create your speech-recognition profile, you install a different microphone from the one that is configured for use with your computer, or you add an additional microphone to your system. -or-

  • You switch microphones to one that you used when you created your speech recognition profile, without setting that microphone as the default.

CAUSE

Speech recognition in Microsoft Word 2002 is designed to work with one microphone per profile. The microphone that you use when you perform the training (create your profile) is the default and must be used with that profile.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, verify that you are using the correct microphone and profile before you use speech recognition or run the training for speech recognition. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Language Bar, click Tools, and then click Options.
  2. On the Speech Recognition tab, click the Audio Input button.
  3. The correct microphone, most likely, is the Use preferred audio input device option.NOTE: Because the Use preferred audio input device setting can be changed, make sure that, when you use speech recognition, you use the microphone that was installed on the computer when Office XP was installed, or use the microphone that you used for the training.

NOTES

If you configure another microphone, do not replace the existing microphone that is set as the default.

If you created your profile with the wrong microphone, you must create a new speech-recognition profile. Discard the existing profile that you configured with the wrong microphone. The profile is damaged by being configured for one microphone or input device and then trained for another microphone or input device.

MORE INFORMATION

Some USB microphones may not be enabled until you restart your computer after installing the microphone.
