SYMPTOMS
When you try to add a modem on a client computer from modem pool that is running the Small Business Server (SBS) or BackOffice Server (BOS) Modem Sharing service, the modem may not be detected or the virtual port may not appear in the list of ports under Selected ports.
CAUSE
This problem may occur under any of the following circumstances:
- The modems in the modem pool are in use, either by other users that are using the shared modems, or by programs, such as Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 or Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, that are using the modems.
- The client computer does not have a virtual port that is connected to the shared-modem pool.
- No modems have been assigned to the shared-modem pool.
- The Modem Sharing service is not bound (selected) for the network connection that is used by the server to connect to the local area network (LAN).
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Verify that there is a virtual port that is connected to the server's modem pool by running the following command from a command prompt on the client computer:
netmodem use
cr - In BOS or SBS, verify that the modem is included in the modem pool: In Control Panel, double-click Shared Modem Service, and then click the Configuration tab.
- In BOS or SBS, verify that another shared-modem user is not currently using the modem: In Control Panel, double-click Shared Modem Service, and then click the Status tab.
- In BOS or SBS, verify that another service is not currently using the modem.
- In Control Panel, double-click Phone and Modem Options on the client computer, manually select the modem, and then click the virtual port under Selected ports.
- Ensure that the redirected port on the client is not already in use by another program that is running on the client computer.
- If the Modem Sharing service is not bound to the LAN connection and is not available to be installed by clicking the Install button in the properties of the LAN connection, run the Small Business Server Setup program. On the Small Business Server Component Selection screen for the Shared Modem service, click Install. Restart the server when you are prompted, and then verify that the Shared Modem service is bound (selected) for the LAN connection.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Small Business Server 2000.
