OFF2001: Document Type Appears as 97-98 Version in the Save or Save As Dialog Box

Article ID: 279824

Article Last Modified on 1/29/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Mac
  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q279824

SYMPTOMS

In the Save As or Save dialog box of an Office 2001 for Mac program, the default document type may appear with an earlier version. For example:

  • Microsoft Word 97-98 Document
  • Microsoft Excel 97/98 Workbook

CAUSE

This problem can occur when you have Office 2001 for Mac and Office 98 Macintosh Edition installed on the same computer.

This behavior occurs when the operating system reads the creator of Word documents that is listed first in the desktop database and displays this information in the Navigation Services dialog box.

The desktop database may list Office 98 first, instead of Office 2001, even after you rebuild the desktop. This can occur when Office 98 Macintosh Edition is located on the same level (or a higher level) on the hard disk as Office 2001, or when Office 2001 is installed on a secondary drive or partition. The Save As dialog box displays the earlier-version file formats listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article, because Office 2001 programs use Navigation Services, which pulls this text string from the desktop database.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do one of the following:

  • Remove Office 98 Macintosh Edition from the computer. -or-

  • Move Office 2001 for Mac to the root of the primary drive, and then move Office 98 to a subfolder of the hard disk or to a secondary drive. After you complete one of the preceding steps, rebuild the desktop by following these steps:

    1. If the computer is running, click Restart on the Special menu. If the computer is not running, turn the computer on.
    2. Press and hold COMMAND+OPTION while the computer is starting.
    3. Continue to hold COMMAND+OPTION until you see a dialog box that asks you to rebuild the desktop. Release COMMAND+OPTION, and then click OK.

NOTE: A progress bar appears while the system rebuilds the desktop.
