SYMPTOMS

When you try to play Microsoft Links or start Arnold Palmer Course Designer, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • You may receive an access violation.
  • You may receive a fatal exception 0E or a fatal exception 28 error message.
  • You may receive a "Failed to create surface" error message.
  • You may receive an "Invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll" error message.
  • You many receive a "Failed OX88760037-DDERR Exception" error message.
  • The program may stop responding (hang).
  • Half of the course may be displayed correctly and half of the course may appear black.
  • The video quality may degrade noticeably after each stroke.
  • The game may quit unexpectedly, particularly during a multiplayer game.


CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the video driver for your video adapter is damaged or outdated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they appear.

Disable AGP Texturing in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type DXDIAG, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Display tab.
  4. Under DirectX Features, next to AGP Texture Acceleration, click Disable.
  5. When you receive the following warning, click OK:

    This will disable usage of AGP (Acceleration Graphics Port) for all display devices on your system which support it.

  6. Click Exit.

If the problem continues to occur, continue with the next method.

Configure the Software Rendering Display Mode

Note This option is not available in Links 2003. To configure Links in software rendering mode use Links Safe Mode. To configure the software rendering display mode, follow these steps:

  1. On the Links 2001 startup screen, click Options.
  2. Click Graphic Settings.
  3. Under Device, click Software Renderer.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to restart Links 2001 with the new settings.

If you start Links Safe Mode, you automatically configure the game to run in software rendering display mode.

To start Links Safe Mode, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Games, point to Links, and then click Links Safe Mode.

If the problem continues to occur, continue with the next method.

Configure the Microsoft Windows Display Settings

Configure the Windows desktop to use a High Color palette and a screen resolution of 800 by 600 pixels. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Under Screen Area (or Desktop), move the slider to the 800 by 600 pixels position.
  5. Under Color Palette (or Colors), click High Color (16-bit).
  6. Click OK.
  7. Quit Control Panel.
  8. If you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

If the problem continues to occur, continue with the next method.

Download and Install the Latest Video Driver

Contact your video hardware manufacturer to obtain and install the latest version of the driver for your video adapter. For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your video adapter, see the "References" section of this article.

To identify the name and manufacturer of your video adapter:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Display tab.
  4. Under Device, look for Name and Manufacturer.
  5. Click Exit.
