SYMPTOMS
If a Windows 2000-based domain controller server experiences an access violation in Netlogon.dll, the server may crash.
CAUSE
This behavior can result if a client sends a data structure to a domain controller server and a certain field in the structure is uninitialized to indicate what information should come back. The structure is sent as a result of a generic pass-through authentication. Typically, the uninitialized variable is out of range and the remote procedure call (RPC) catches it. However, if the uninitialized variable is a 3, indicating that the structure is a NETLOGON_VALIDATION_SAM_INFO2, an access violation in Netlogon.dll causes the server to crash.
RESOLUTION
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
