SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a new document or a template, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:

• Works cannot access one or more required files. The files may have been renamed, deleted or moved. Try reinstalling Works, and then starting the program again.

• A required .dll file, C:\Windows\System\Msvcrt20.dll, was not found.

• Cannot find file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\Wksss.exe' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

• Cannot find the file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\Wksdb.exe' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

• Works cannot access the program you selected. Necessary files may be missing, corrupted, or may have been deleted. To restore the files, reinstall the program, and then try starting the program again. If you no longer use the program, with the right mouse button, click the program name, and then click Delete.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Msvcrt20.dll file is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, extract the Msvcrt20.dll file from the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM:

1. Insert the Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the Windows CD-ROM from starting automatically.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type sfc, and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract one file from installation disk option.
5. Type msvcrt20.dll.
6. Click Start.
7. In the Restore from box, type cdrom:\win98 where cdrom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
8. In the Save file in box, type C:\Windows\System.
9. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
