Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file. Important If you installed Picture It! Publishing that ships in the Microsoft Works Suite 2000 or Microsoft Works Suite 2001 package, to prevent a licensing agreement error message, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. Expand the Program Files folder.
  3. Expand the WorksBkUp folder.
  4. Click the Works Shared folder.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  6. Expand the Common Files folder.
  7. Click the Microsoft Shared folder.
  8. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  9. Click Yes to All to overwrite existing files and folders.
  10. Quit Microsoft Windows Explorer.
  11. Download, install, and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings associated with your products installation.

For additional information about how to download, install, and use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

290301 Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

  12. To use the Windows CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
    2. Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
    3. Click OK, and then click Exit.

Note Because the Windows Installer CleanUp utility removes Windows Installer-related registry settings and not the program files, make sure that you install your program in the same folder where it was originally installed to prevent duplication of files on your hard disk.

Copy Internet Explorer and MDAC to the Desktop

Note If you are running Windows Millennium Edition (Me), skip to the "Clean Boot Your Computer" section.

  1. Insert the Greetings Disc 1 or Picture It! Disc 1 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the program from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type cd rom:\PIP\Redist in the Open box.

In this example, cd rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

  1. Right-click IE, and then click Copy.
  2. Right-click an empty area on the desktop, and then click Paste.
  3. In the Redist dialog box, right-click MDAC, and then click Copy.
  4. Right-click on the desktop, and then click Paste.
  5. Close the Redist window.

Restart in Safe Mode

Note This and the following two sections are to be done on Windows 95 or Windows 98 operating systems only. Do not install these programs in safe mode on Windows Me, or Windows 2000.

  1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  2. Click Restart The Computer, and then click Yes.
  3. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95, as soon as you receive the Starting Windows 95 message, press F5.

If you are using Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me), press and hold down the SHIFT key as soon as the POST (Power on Self Test) has completed.

  1. When Windows is finished starting, close the message about Safe Mode.

Install MDAC

  1. On the desktop, double-click MDAC.
  2. Double-click Mdac_typ.exe.
  3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install MDAC.
  4. Restart your computer in Safe Mode again.

If reinstalling the above version of MDAC does not help, try downloading the latest release of MDAC. Use the following steps for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Install Internet Explorer

  1. On the desktop, double-click IE.
  2. Double-click Ie5setup.exe.
  3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install Internet Explorer.
  4. Restart your computer.

Clean Boot Your Computer

To clean boot your computer, follow the appropriate steps for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Windows Me

  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective startup.
  3. Click to clear all the check boxes under Selective startup.
  4. On the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box.
  5. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

After the computer restarts, click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.

Important Look closely at the General tab to ensure that the check boxes you cleared are still cleared. Proceed to step 6 if none of the check boxes is selected. If you see a disabled or gray check box, your computer is not truly "clean-booted" and you may need assistance from the manufacturer of the program that places a check mark back into Msconfig.

  1. After you verify that your computer is clean-booted in step 5, you can isolate the issue. If the original issue does not reoccur after the clean boot, select one item at a time under Selective startup, and then restart the computer to see if the additional entry reproduces the original issue.

Windows 98

  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process Config.sys File
    • Process Autoexec.bat File
    • Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
    • Load Startup Group Items
  3. On the Win.ini tab, click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Load=
    • Run=
  4. Click OK.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

For additional information about how to clean boot Windows 98, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

192926 How to perform clean-boot troubleshooting for Windows 98

Note To restore your original Startup options, click Normal Startup on the General tab in the System Configuration Utility.

Windows 95

  1. Restart the computer. When you see the Starting Windows 95 message, press F8, and then select Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.
  2. At the command prompt, type win, and then press ENTER. Press and hold down SHIFT until the Windows startup sequence is completed.
  3. Turn off any antivirus or disk tool programs that are installed on the computer. For information about how to turn off these programs, see the printed or online documentation for the program.
  4. Quit all running programs except Explorer and Systray. To do this, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click the program that you want to quit, and then click End Task. If you receive a message that the program is busy or not responding, click End Task again. Repeat this step to quit all programs except Explorer and Systray.

For additional information about how to clean boot Windows 95, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

177604 Multimedia: Troubleshooting using clean boot of Windows 95

Note To restore your original Startup options, restart the computer normally, and then turn on any antivirus or disk tool programs that are installed on the computer. For information about how to turn on these programs, see the printed or online documentation for the program.

Reinstall Greetings, Picture It! Photo, or Picture It! Publishing

Insert the Greetings Disc 1 or the Picture It! Disc 1 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. If Setup starts automatically, follow the instructions on the screen to install the program.

Note Do not use Minimal installation options.

If Setup does not start automatically, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type cd rom:\setup in the Open box, and then click OK.

In this example, cd rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

  1. Follow the prompts.

We recommend that you use a "Typical" or "Full" installation option to prevent usage issues after you install Greetings or Picture It! If you use the "Minimal" installation option after you perform the steps in this article, most thumbnails of the clip art are not created in the catalogue. The clip art may be in the list, but with a standard icon, instead of the thumbnail icon. You must right-click the standard icon and insert the appropriate CD-ROM to gain access to the clip art.
