SYMPTOMS
If you try to renew an Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 certificate that has been issued by Certificate Server 1.0, and you follow the instructions in Q277891, when you attempt to submit the renewal request to the Certificate Server by using the Web interface, you may receive the following error message:
CAUSE
IIS 5.0 generates the renewal request file in a PKCS#7 format, which is not supported by Certificate Server 1.0.
RESOLUTION
On the computer running IIS 5.0, install the fix in the following Knowledge Base article, and then generate a new request in PKCS#10 format:

WORKAROUND
Remove the expired certificate, and then request a new certificate from Certificate Server 1.0.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Internet Information Services 5.0.
MORE INFORMATION
The renewal process works correctly in Microsoft Certificate Server 2.0.
