Sharepoint Portal Server and Exchange Server are not supported together on the same computer, even though the product documentation and Setup imply that they can run together. For example, if you try to install SharePoint Portal Server on a computer that Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server is installed on, you may receive the following error message:

Like messaging servers, SharePoint Portal Server computers have a role to play in a corporation's collaborative environment. Microsoft encourages customers to use the services and data from Exchange 2000 and SharePoint Portal Server together in their collaborative solutions. Microsoft recommends that customers, particularly larger enterprises, deploy these solutions alongside one another. For most customers, the Exchange 2000 server is a mission-critical server for their organizations. Because of this, these customers want to keep their Exchange 2000 operations running separately from other server programs. For example, usage profiles for Exchange 2000 and SharePoint Portal Server computers differ greatly. As a result, performance, end-user profiles, and server operations as a whole need to be managed differently.
