256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When you make changes with the Microsoft Office XP Custom Maintenance Wizard, your changes are not applied on the client computer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Office XP Custom Maintenance Wizard has already been run on the client computer.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, delete the following two registry keys

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\office\10.0\User Settings

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\User Settings

and then run the Office XP Custom Maintenance Wizard again. To do this:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and click the first registry key.
  4. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File, and then export the registry key to your desktop folder.
  5. Right-click the registry key, and then click Delete.
  6. Repeat step 3 through step 5 for the second registry key.
  7. Click Exit on the Registry menu.
