SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Word 2002 document that contains comments, when you click Markup on the View menu, it appears as though nothing happens. For example, you do not see the Reviewing Pane or the markup balloon that contains the comment text. The only change you may notice is that the bracket denoting a comment either appears or disappears.

CAUSE

When you select the Markup feature, markup balloons that contain comments are displayed in print layout view and Web layout view. The markup balloons are not displayed in either outline view or normal view. The Reviewing Pane also does not appear. However, the Reviewing toolbar does appear.

NOTE: To select the Markup feature, click Markup on the View menu.

WORKAROUND

To view or make changes to a comment, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Display the Reviewing Pane

To display the Reviewing Pane, follow these steps:

  1. If the Reviewing toolbar is not displayed, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Reviewing.
  2. On the Reviewing toolbar, click Show, and then click Reviewing Pane. Or click the Reviewing Pane button on the Reviewing toolbar.

NOTE: The Reviewing Pane appears at the bottom of the Word window and you can either view the comments, or make changes to the comments.

Method 2: Change the Document View

To change the document view so that the comment balloons appear, click either Print Layout or Web Layout on the View menu. You can now view the comments contained in the document, or you can click into a comment and make the changes that you want.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you rest your mouse pointer on a comment, a ToolTip appears to indicate the commenter's name and the data and time that the comment was inserted. This ToolTip should appear when you rest the mouse pointer on a comment balloon or on the area where the comment was inserted. If the area where the comment was inserted is an insertion point (not selected text), a ToolTip is not displayed in any view. If you want a ToolTip to be displayed when you rest the mouse pointer on a comment area, select the text that you want to be associated with the comment before you insert the comment.
