Cluster Disks May Be Incorrectly Accessible from All Nodes

SYMPTOMS

Although a cluster disk is online on one cluster node, other nodes may be able to access the disk at the same time. This may cause fatal disk corruption. The following error messages may be generated:

The file or directory X:\$Mft is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

Event ID 26

System Process - Lost Delayed-Write Data

The system was attempting to transfer file data from buffers to \Device\Harddisk#\Partition#\. The write operation failed, and only some of the data may have been written to the file.

CAUSE

The shared cluster disk contains a non-NTFS partition (for example, in an EISA configuration). You can use the Diskmap tool from the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit to determine if the shared disk contains a partition with an ID other than 0x07 (ID 0x07 is an NTFS partition).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

Delete all non-NTFS partitions from the shared disk. Ensure that the partitions do not contain data that you need. This method may require you to start the computer with an MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows 95, or Microsoft Windows 98 Startup disk and use the Fdisk tool to delete the partition.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
