SYMPTOMS

When you are using your Windows 2000-based computer, your computer may become unstable, it may stop responding (hang), and you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Your computer may become unresponsive to input from your keyboard or mouse.
  • The screen may become black.
  • All of the processes on your computer may may stop responding (hang).

Note that these symptoms are not specific to any particular hardware, and may occur with any configuration. However, these symptoms are more likely to occur with computers that have multiple Central Processing Units (CPUs) because of the increased concurrency.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because of a code defect in SCSI port driver (Scsiport.sys).


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
