SYMPTOMS

Client side caching defaults to use the Client_side_caching_drive\Temp folder or the Client_side_caching_drive folder to store temporary files. Problems may occur if the user who is logged on does not have the correct permissions to this folder.

Client side caching is updated in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) to store temporary files in the %temp% location.

CAUSE

Client side caching was originally set to use the Client_side_caching_drive\Temp folder or the Client_side_caching_drive folder to store temporary files. This problem can occur if users do not have the correct permissions to these folders or if the folders do not exist.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
