Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability skills.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1/SR-1a) update from http://office.microsoft.com onto a computer that has a Microsoft Access 2000 run-time application (instead of Microsoft Office or Access 2000), you receive the following SR-1 update message:

The Update program did not locate the expected version of Microsoft Office 2000 on this machine.

CAUSE

You receive this message when the Access 2000 run-time application includes the Alternative Version of the Access Run-Time, otherwise known as Microsoft Access Run-Time Minimal.

NOTE: You do not need to apply Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 if you are not experiencing any of the few Access Run-Time issues that are addressed by it.

For information on what Access Run-Time issues are addressed by Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

RESOLUTION

There are two steps to resolve this issue:

  1. This step must be taken on the developer's computer. The developer must install SR-1 from the MOD 2000 SR-1 fulfillment CD on the development computer. The developer must then repackage and redeploy the run-time application using the Alternative Version of the Access Run-Time, which is included with the MOD 2000 SR-1 fulfillment CD.
  2. This step must be taken on the client's computer. The client must back up the mdb file that is used by the run-time application, uninstall the old run-time application, re-install the new run-time application created in step 1, and restore the mdb file from the backup.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. On a clean computer (a computer that has a newly installed version of Windows, and no other applications), install Office or Access 2000, install Office 2000 Developer, and install Access 2000 Run-Time Minimum (that is, the Alternative Version of the Access Run-Time).
  2. Create a run-time application that uses the Alternative Version of the Access Run-Time.
  3. Install this run-time application onto a clean target computer (a computer that does not have any other application from Office 2000).
  4. Try to install the Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a update from http://office.microsoft.com onto the target computer. Note that you receive the message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
