SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit Ipsecpol.exe tool may run very slowly. This issue can occur when you are creating many IP Security (IPSec) objects (roughly 1,000).

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Ipsecpol.exe tool checks the objects in a way that does not scale for a large number of objects.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

NOTE: This hotfix introduced a new behavior in the ipsecpol.exe Resource Kit utility. The -file option was added. The -file option allows users to specify the command arguments in a file rather than on the command line. The -file option identifies the file which contains the command arguments.

There is a restriction with this release of the Ipsecpol.exe utility when using the -file option. The length of the command argument text (in the file) is limited to 254 characters.

This limitation will be lifted with the Ipsecpol.exe Resource Kit utility in the August 2001 release of the Resource kit.
